Zhang Bichen (张碧晨)
Zhang was born in Tianjin, China on September 10, 1989.
In 2013, Zhang became a trainee in South Korean management company Haeun Entertainment. In the same year, she debuted her singing career by becoming a member of South Korean girl group Sunny Days. In 2013, she won the championship of K-Pop World Festival in China. In 2014, she left the group.
In 2014, Zhang competed in season 3 of the Chinese singing talent show The Voice of China, and was the winner where she covered the Chinese singer Reno Wang’s song “Where Is the Time Gone?” in the final round. In the same year, she sang the interlude song titled “In the Span of a Kiss” for the Chinese television drama The Young Doctor. In 2015, she sang the interlude song titled “Annual Ring” for the Chinese television drama The Journey of Flower. In the same year, she appeared on the Chinese reality show Be the Idol. In 2016, she appeared on the Chinese reality show Mask Singer. In the same year, she held her first solo concert, and released her debut solo studio album, Morning Bound for Midnight. In March 2017, she appeared on the Chinese singing competition Singer. she eventually made it to the finals after qualifying in the Breakouts, where she finished sixth.
Jane Zhang (张靓颖)
Born and raised in Chengdu, Jane Zhang debuted her singing career by winning the third place at the Chinese singing contest Super Girl in 2005. The next year she signed with the Huayi Music. Her 2006 debut studio album, The One , sold more than one million albums in China. Zhang’s second studio album, Update, was released in 2007. Buoyed by the success of pop single “We said”, Update became one of the best-selling album of 2007 in China. In 2008, she released a song with Andrea Bocelli titled “One World,One Dream”, The song for Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.
After signing with Universal Music Group in 2009, Zhang released her fourth studio album, Believe In Jane (2010), yielded the successful single “If This Is Love”. Her fifth studio album, Reform (2011), sold eighty thousand copies within one month in China. which was ultimately certified Double platinum by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI). Her live album, Listen To JaneZ Live, was released in 2012 and achieved number one in the chinese music charts. In 2014, She signed with the Sony Music Entertainment and released her sixth studio album, The Seventh Sense (2014), incorporated songs of genres such as r&b and pop.
Zhang’s English song, “Dust My Shoulders Off”, was released in 2016. The song became background music of HULU in the US.
Li Yuchun (李宇春)
Li Yuchun was born March 10, 1984, in Chengdu, Sichuan. Her father was a railroad police officer, while her mother was a teacher. After she finished her high school studies at Xindu No.1 Middle School, Li attended the Sichuan Conservatory of Music in 2002. In 2005, Li won the champion in the Chinese singing contest Super Girl.
In 2005, Li released a few singles, including “Merry Christmas”, “Give Me Five”, and “Happy Wake Up”. After signing with Chinese record label Taihe Rye, Li started to make her debut album, The Queen and the Dreams, which was released in September 2006. In the same month, Li held her first solo concert in Beijing. In the same year, Li collaborated with Chinese band The Catcher in the Rye to release a charity song titled “Green”.
Li was announced the ambassador for Gucci Timepieces and Jewelry in Asia in Jun 2016. In the same year, Li released her seventh studio album, Growing Wild. Li broke with tradition by separating the new album into four EPs. She invited producers she had never worked with before, like Hsia Yu, Wyman Wong and Chen Weilun. The first EP, Wild, sold 3 million copies in 16 days after it was released in May of last year. The three other EPs were then released within six months, with total sales of more than 6.5 million copies, grossing over 32.8 million yuan ($4.73 million) in 2016.
Tia Ray (袁娅维)
Born in Huaihua, a small town in the province of Hunan, Tia Ray moved to Beijing to study performing arts. Her music has been inspired by the likes of Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, Stevie Wonder, India Arie and Ray Charles (hence her name Tia Ray). Her soulful redition of the classic Chinese favourite tune ”The Curvy Moon” on The Voice Of China brought public attention to this young talent with a big voice from a small town. She then released her debut album <T.I.A.> in November 2014.
She represents a new generation of Chinese artist who can crossover from traditional to the contemporary, from Chinese pop to international fusion to soul. Her vocal touched the hearts of many, particularly “Love Apart”, (theme song for Chinese box office hit “The Ex-file：The Return Of The Exes”) which topped all charts and set a record of 1.8 billion clicks, making her a household name.
Tia released her second album “TIARA” in April 2018 which re-defined next generation of C-pop and sealed her position as the leader of Soul-Pop in China.
Song Qian or Victorial Song (宋茜)
Song Qian was born February 2, 1987 in Qingdao, China. She left her hometown at a young age to study Chinese traditional dance at the Beijing Dance Academy. After her high school graduation, she was accepted to the Beijing Dance Academy and majored in Chinese ethnic dance.
In September 2007, Victoria was first scouted by an S.M. Entertainment casting agent while in Beijing dance competition and eventually cast into S.M. Entertainment after passing the audition under SM Casting System. She was originally trained to prepare for her acting and modeling career in South Korea. Prior to debuting, Victoria was introduced to the public through various appearances in music videos and commercials; her first appearance is in Spris commercial with Lee Joon-gi in early 2008. She made her official debut as a member of f(x) in September 2009.
In June 2010, Victoria became a cast member for the first season of the variety show Invincible Youth in which she was a part of G7, consisting of 7 female idols from various groups. She was also cast on the reality show We Got Married with Nichkhun of 2PM. The couple was collectively known as Khuntoria in the variety show. Nichkhun and Victoria both gained entertainment-wide popularity as a result of the show’s success. At the end of the year, Victoria won the ‘Popularity Award’ at the MBC Entertainment Awards for her stint in We Got Married.
In January 2012, Victoria was cast to play the lead role in the Chinese-Taiwanese co-production When Love Walked In.
From January to April 2017, Victoria co-hosted the variety program Ace vs Ace.
In January 2018, Victoria starred in The Chronicles of Town Called Jian, a mystery period drama produced by Li Shaohong; based on the “Tarot Goddess Sleuths” series.
Gloria Tang Sze-wing (邓紫棋)
Professionally known by her stage name G.E.M. (Get Everybody Moving), Tang Tsz-kei, is a Chinese born Hong Kong singer-songwriter and actress, widely known for her vocal range and stage presence. She made her debut in the Hong Kong music scene with the release of her self-titled EP G.E.M. in 2008.
G.E.M. was born in Shanghai, China, and moved to Hong Kong at the age of four. She grew up with a musical background; her mother is an alumnae from Shanghai Conservatory of Music, her grandfather was a saxophonist, and her uncle was a violinist. G.E.M. started to write songs at the age of thirteen. She featured in a performance on Hong Kong Television at the age of seven. She achieved ABRSM’s piano grade 8 at the age of thirteen.
In January 2014, she appeared in the Chinese singing competition I Am a Singer (season 2), and her second-place finish gained her immense popularity and fame in Greater China.
In 2016, she appeared on the list of Forbes 30 Under 30 (Music), being the only Asian musician on the list. In the same year, she was asked to voice a lead role in the animated film Charming, alongside Demi Lovato, Ashley Tisdale, and Avril Lavigne.
On 4 November, G.E.M. was invited to perform the song “Light Years Away” and served as on-stage presenter in the Breakthrough Prize. On 19 November 2018, she was selected as the BBC 100 Women.
Shang Wenjie (尚雯婕)
Born 22 December 1982, Shang Wenjie or Laure is the champion of the third (2006) season of the Chinese singing contest Super Girl. In 2011, she also won the award for Best Female Singer at the annual MusicRadio China TOP Charts Awards.
She majored in French in Fudan University and was French song contest winner of the second season.
In May 2006, She participated in Hunan TV programmes – the third Super Girl, and finally won 5,196,975 votes in the final, the highest number of votes in its history. She wrote a travel essay, entitled “Parallel with the Dream – XiaoSanr in France.” sharing her feelings when she visited France two years ago.
April 2011, Shang Wenjie won Best Female Singer title in MusicRadio China Top Anniversary.
September 2011, Shang Wenjie was invited by French Government as the spokeswoman for China French Language Year.
Huang Liling or A-Lin (黃麗玲)
A-Lin is a Taiwanese aboriginal singer and songwriter of Amis descent.
In 1999, when A-Lin was 16 years old and taught children to sing the hymn “Amazing Grace” after the 921 earthquake in Nantou County, she was discovered by her former agent. However, he was not available when she wanted to give him contact information. Fortunately, four years later, A-Lin met him again in a bar where she sang regularly. She was officially offered a singing contract.
A-Lin made her debut in the world of music at the end of 2006, achieving rapid commercial success. She has been called the next A-Mei, who is an aboriginal singer of Puyuma descent. She also got the nickname 天生歌姬, meaning “A Born Diva”. A-Lin was often quoted as saying that A-Mei is highly influential to her music and often covers A-Mei’s songs in music shows and concerts. A-Lin has won numerous music awards and is extremely popular within Mandarin-speaking world.
In 2015, she participated in the third season of I Am a Singer and came in sixth on the finale held in March 2015. As a result, her singing ability was recognized by more people and provided a boost to her career.
Angela Chang (张韶涵)
Born 19 January 1982, Angela Zhang is a Taiwanese Canadian singer and actress best known for her work on Taiwanese television drama My MVP Valentine. She subsequently debuted as a singer with her first studio album Over the Rainbow released in 2004 by Linfair Records and was met with instant success. In 2018, she participated in the popular Chinese singing contest Singer 2018 both as a host and contestant.
Chang was born into an ethnic Hakka family from Zhongli, Taoyuan, Taiwan. At the age of ten, Chang moved to Singapore to study. After a few months, she returned to Taiwan because she “was not able to adapt (to life) there”. Her family later migrated to Vancouver, where she attended Sir Winston Churchill Secondary School.
Chang’s popularity rose as she played a leading role in the Taiwanese television drama My MVP Valentine with Taiwanese boy band 5566, followed by a leading role in another Taiwanese television drama At Dolphin Bay with Taiwanese actor Wallace Huo, in which she also sang the ending theme song (Yi Shi De Mei Hao) and english song (Journey). She has been nominated twice for Best Actress at Golden Bell Awards.
Hebe Tien (田馥甄)
Born 30 March 1983, Tien is a Taiwanese singer and actress. Born and raised in Hsinchu, Taiwan, she rose to fame in the early 2000s as a member of Taiwanese girl group S.H.E. The release of her debut album, To Hebe (2010), established her as a solo artist. Tien’s song “A Little Happiness”, the theme song of the 2015 Taiwanese film Our Times, was a major hit in most Mandarin-speaking parts of Asia.
Following a very successful career with S.H.E, Tien debuted as a solo music artist in 2010 to similar success and critical acclaim for her music albums.
In early 2015, Tien’s songs in three albums received more than 10 million views on YouTube.
In February 2017, she performed the Chinese theme song for the film Beauty and the Beast with Chinese singer Jing Boran. In May 2017, her album Day By Day was nominated for two awards at the 28th Golden Melody Awards.
