Donald Trump takes on China directly yesterday during his speech at the UN General Assembly, accusing China of market distortions and other abuses.
“I have great respect and affection for my friend, President Xi, but I have made clear our trade imbalance is just not acceptable,” Trump said. “China’s market distortions and the way they deal cannot be tolerated.”
“We will no longer tolerate such abuse. We will not allow our workers to be victimized, our companies to be cheated, and our wealth to be plundered and transferred.” He added.
The United States has just announced tariffs on another $200 billion in Chinese-made goods for a total of $250 billion and Trump is threatening to add another $267 billion if Beijing dares to retaliate.
Donald Trump apparently has targeted China on violation of WTO rules and used its state-owned enterprises to outfit the system in its favor, although not naming Beijing in particular.
He said, “Countries were admitted to the World Trade Organization that violate every single principle on which the organization is based. While the United States and many other nations play by the rules, these countries use government-run industrial planning and state-owned enterprises to rig the system in their favor. They engage in relentless product dumping, forced technology transfer, and the theft of intellectual property”.
China has accused the US of holding a knife to its neck and rules out new talks to resolve the trade war, and portrayed itself as a virtuous defender of global trade.
China’s trade negotiator Wang Shouwen said in a news conference earlier this week, “Now that the United States has adopted such huge restrictive measures, like holding a knife to someone’s neck, how can negotiations proceed? It would not be negotiations of equality.”
If we shall have a public vote, most ordinary Chinese would like to see the Trump Administration act further to cut through its neck directly, instead of just holding the knife close to the neck.
It’s now very clear that Donald Trump’s purpose of waging an “economic war” is far beyond confronting the Communist regime in trade, he has determined to put an end to socialism and communism that has caused so much suffering to humanity.
While citing the devastating example of the once-rich Latin American nation Venezuela, Donald Trump takes his stance further to a global picture, “Virtually everywhere socialism or communism has been tried, it has produced suffering, corruption, and decay. Socialism’s thirst for power leads to expansion, incursion, and oppression. All nations of the world should resist socialism and the misery that it brings to everyone”.
While “the United States is committed to making the United Nations more effective and accountable”, as Trump has put it, President Xi Jinping, representing a “responsible” super power, does not attend this UN General Assembly. Xi has been so ambitious to lead the world with his Belt and Road Initiative. How come he could have missed such an important stage to speak out to the world audience?
Donald Trump said yesterday, very clearly, “I presented a vision to achieve a brighter future for all of humanity”. “We are standing up for America and for the American people. And we are also standing up for the world”. “In America, we believe in the majesty of freedom and the dignity of the individual.” “The United States will not tell you how to live or work or worship.”
With the tightening nationwide censorship and crackdown on religious practices, demolishing churches, burning bibles, jailing Muslims in re-education camps, the mouths of the Chinese are mostly sealed and freedom of speech is out of existence.
President Xi says his Communist Party governs everything, “telling you how to live and work and worship”. The “path-confident” President Xi must have a path so different from the rest of the world that he has no confidence to share with the UN General Assembly participants.
An old Chinese saying goes like this, “If your paths are different, you cannot make plans together”.
This may be the main reason why President Xi has not come for this UN General Assembly.
